| Bingo is a popular game in the United States and is sponsored by a wide variety of organizations such as churches, charity organizations, clubs, groups, associations, or local businesses. It is basically a game of chance where numbers are randomly selected and matched against cards containing printed numbers. The first person to have a card where the drawn numbers are consistent with their card numbers in a particular pattern (such as a straight line, diagonal, four corners etc.) yells "Bingo" and is the winner of that particular round. Bingo is sometimes referred to as a form of lottery because it is a descendant of "Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia". When Italy was united in 1530, the Italian National Lottery (Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia) was organized and continues to be held (with minimal interruption) on a weekly basis to this very day. The Italian State lottery continues to provide a very valuable contribution to the government budget, with sizeable annual contributions. Around about 1778, the classic version of Le Lotto was developed in France, with playing cards that we associate with today's Bingo games. They typically had three horizontal and nine vertical rows. During the 1800’s the game was further expanded and educational Lotto games became very popular. There were a wide variety of uses for the game, such as to teach children how to multiply, or how to improve their spelling. During December, 1929 a toy salesman named Edwin Lowe was travelling to Georgia and noticed a game of Beano. When he tried to join the game, there were no seats to be found and no opportunity for him to play. That night Edwin Lowe spoke with the operator of the game who said he had adapted the Lotto game and had experienced huge success with it. Once Lowe returned to his home in New York he organized an informal game to test it out. Upon winning, one of the players became so excited at winning they yelled out Bingo, which has stuck with the game to this day. Needless to say, the game was an immediate success. By 1934 there were approximately 10,000 Bingo games each week and Lowe’s company was just trying to keep up with the demand. Today there are thousands of games throughout the United States and the every increasing popularity of online Bingo continues to expand an already massive base of bingo fans. |
