How the Digital Age has changed Our Interaction with Sport…

We are undoubtedly witnessing the biggest change to televised sporting coverage since the late 1930’s, when the first ever live event was broadcast from the innovative New York World Fair. It was way back in 1939 and there wasn’t even any sound accompanying the live baseball game being televised. Fast-forward around 80 years and things certainly have changed. Television is now on demand, interactive, and supported by the highest quality images with near perfect sound quality. As Briton prepares to go “all digital” in 2012, switching off analogue television signals and FM radio for good, this paper examines how recent radical advances in broadcasting technology have changed the way we watch sport. Interactive digital television is nothing new. In fact, at the time of publishing this article it will have been available to paid service subscribers for around ten years, and the general British public (who have a television license) for about five. It is clear to see the appeal of digital interactive services, which now accompany the majority of televised sporting events covered by Sky Sports and The BBC. Such services present the end user with an opportunity to see replays, live match statistics, and even to switch between multiple views of the same game. One interesting feature available through Sky Sports is the multi-screen option, whereby viewers can monitor the progress of numerous games on their screen at once. The interaction doesn’t stop here, as sport betting companies have taken advantage of the developments in technology also. Because information can now be updated on television screens in real time, these betting companies can easily alter match prices as a game unfolds. For example, should a football team go down by 2-0 at half time, the odds they will go on to win the game will diminish indefinitely. Therefore, if the odds go from 4 -1 to win to 15 -1 to win then punters are more likely to be enticed into making a bet as the return on investment is (potentially) bigger. In addition to being able to update online betting prices in real time (and thus offer more enticing prices), by giving punters the option to place a bet from their living room using a T.V remote presents a level of convenience previously unheard of. Therefore both parties will seemingly benefit immeasurably.
