| Cayo, A Major District in Belize Cayo, about one hour from Belize City, is the largest and most fertile district in Belize. Covering more than 2,000 square miles, rolling hills and sweeping farmlands lead to lush river valleys as well as craggy mountain summits which are sub-tropical jungle. Cayo’s natural wonders include gushing waterfalls and limestone caves. Since over 60% of the Cayo District has been set aside as wildlife sanctuaries or forest reserves, the environment is relatively pristine…ready to offer a unique retreat in Belize. The Cayo District is the home of the Maya ancient ceremonial center of Xunantunich. Xunantunich Ruins This Maya ceremonial center is situated on a hill over-looking the Belize River. Xunantunich means “stone woman” in Mayan and is aptly named for our journey as we prepared to meditate on the steps of this impressive pyramid. It was a thriving city until the collapse of the entire Mayan Civilization. The largest pyramid, El Castillo, rises 130 feet above the main plaza, and more than 250 feet above the river valley below. El Castillo is famous for the frieze (or band of stucco carvings) which expand around the entire temple. Some of the elements appear to be signs. For instance, the mask with “big ears” represents the sun god. Beside this is the sign for the moon. A border of signs represent Venus and the different Mayan days. The jungle which surrounds the ruins creates a mysterious and magical setting for an incomparable Belize adventure! The Ruins… A Unique Place for Meditation and Dance Jungle birds were encouraging us to climb the steps of this breathtaking ruin. Jude, the retreat leader and president of The Vision Exchange, told us that there were really no words to describe the thrill we would feel in this environment. And she was correct! Connecting with the ancestors, their wisdom – breath by breath, step by step – provides a high that you may never have experienced. In this heady atmosphere, the primal feelings merged with the divinity that we were in touch with, and we even danced on the powerful stones, focusing inward while our energy tapped into the ancient ones! Returning for another retreat in Belize It was obvious that I would need to return to Belize as soon as possible. Jude is an exceptional teacher and spiritual leader. In fact, I had no idea that she even used tantric exercises as just one mode of reaching deep into the feminine. (I’ll describe more about this in another article.) Where else would you experience yoga during the solstice on the ruins of an ancient temple? What other places have allowed you to get in touch with your primal nature while dancing on the steps of a timeworn Mayan ruin? There were no words to describe how this goddess journey in Belize has changed my life. Communication happened in my heart and soul, creating a deeper sense of self. I knew my life would never be the same! I’ll definitely be back. And this time, I’ll be able to convince loved ones that this Belize adventure is a soulful journey that provides that special essence of pure joy that will enrich their lives forever. |
