Increase in the prescription of the generic drugs is observed in last 1 year. The rise in the sale of generic was observed to be really good by all the chemists in the world. The chemists association in United States stated that consumers prefer the generic drugs over the brand name drugs. Even doctors are prescribing the generic drugs instead of brand name drugs. Insurers are forcing doctors to prescribe the generic drugs for their profits. Insurers are asking the doctors to follow the step therapy, in which the doctors should prescribe the generic drug first and then if it doesn’t show the effect then prescribe the costlier brand name drug.

When generic drugs came to the market, every one started using them because of the low prices in comparison to the brand name drug. Thus, generic drugs started capturing the market. But, the entry of generic drugs made the sale of brand name drugs to decrease. Thus brand name drug manufacturers filed a case against the generic drug manufacturer for copying the contents and formulation of the original brand name product. They also said that generic drugs are not safe and have serious hazards on the human health. Generic drug manufacturers denied the claims. Finally the court asked the food and drug administration to check the quality standards, properties, and effects of the generic drugs.

Food and Drug Administration submitted its report to the court which mentioned that generic drugs are absolutely safe and have the same effects like the brand name drugs. On the basis of the report submitted by Food and Drug Administration, court declared generic drugs can be sold in the market. Suddenly, a revolution came in the sale of generic drugs. From that date till today a continuous growth is observed in the sales of generic drugs.

Last year showed the tremendous increase in the growth of prescription of the generic drugs. The figures show that 20% of the growth in sales was observed. Increase in the prescription of generic drugs by doctors was 27%. The 6% growth was observed alone in the sale of anti-diabetic generic drugs. The increase observed in the sales of lipid lowering drugs was 4.8%. Growth of 3.8% was observed in the sales of generic drugs related to cardiovascular drugs. Thus, the increase in the overall sales of generic drugs was observed.
