| Bingo is a game that has been played, in some form or another for hundreds of years. In fact, its roots can be found in an Italian game dating from 1530. As time and technology changed, so did the game. French players added cards, and Germans used the concept of Bingo to teach their children tasks like simple arithmetic and spelling in the nineteenth century. For the last one hundred years, bingo has become very popular in the United States and Canada, and a distinctive culture has formed around it. Large Bingo halls– the place where bingo in typically played in North America– provide many people with the social aspects of the game, and allow for prizes. People bring their good luck charms and many have a particular way of marking off the boxes. Most bingo halls are associated with not for profit organizations, like a church or social organization. Since the introduction of the Internet to the game of Bingo, many changes have occurred. There have been several positive innovations to how Bingo reaches players. For example, people who may not have otherwise been introduced to or interested in Bingo without the Internet have discovered a new past time. In addition, there are many people who have mobility issues who can easily make it into a Bingo hall to enjoy a game. Also, due to the nature of the places that would run Bingo tournaments, it often limited the jackpots that could be given out because the organization hosting the event had to play for the room and so on. Bingo is a great game to pass the time, and a wonderful way to meet new friends. The ease of playing Bingo from your comfort zone has also encouraged many new players to give this old game a new try. |
