A book club, also known as a reading group, is a collection of readers who participate in the regular discussion of books. Usually, book club consists of several members who meet in person each month to talk about a specific work. Online book clubs offer several advantages over the traditional reading group model. Due to the vastness of the web and the variety of book clubs available, readers who turn to the Internet to find a book club enjoy a much wider selection of clubs, including many dedicated to a specialized interest or genre. In addition, online book clubs can be more convenient, as many of them are available at any time of day. Of course, there are also disadvantages associated with online book clubs. But you should know about the Do’s and Don’ts of a Book Club: 1. Members of a Book Club should be vigilant about the number of people admitted into the group. Too large of a group can make some individuals desist from offering their estimations. Or a couple of individuals may dominate the discussion, daunting other group members. 2. Make sure that each one participates in the discussion. If a query is asked, everyone should have a say in the round robin. If you see someone being left out, prompt him/her for his/her opinion. 3. Most book clubs members tend to read fiction rather than non-fiction. Be very cautious in selecting a non-fiction book. Most book clubs discover that there can not be much discussion about facts. 4. You should keep remarks while reading...and not just when you are the chief. It helps to expand discussion if specific passages can be read. 5. Even if you dislike the book do not blame the one who suggested it. Your dislike of the book will make livelier discussion. You must Build your own reasons and enjoy that intense interaction with other club members who love the book. After the discussion, you may discover an appreciation for the book that you never had before. I never mull over about these Do’s & Don’ts before joining a Book Club. I am a member of India Today Book Club, which is a serving hand in upgrading the importance of Book Clubs in India.
