Klagenfurt is situated for hundred and forty six meters above sea level where the river Glan meets the lake of Worthersee, not exactly the sunny beaches of Thailand or Greece, but just as pretty. The borders to Slovenia and Italy are not very far away. The town is located right in between several mountains which help create lovely scenery. The mountains of Karawanken is just south of here and this separates Klagenfurt and Austria from the southern countries. Particularly pretty are the houses around the Alter Platz. For example the Rathaus from the sixteenth century with its arcades and the Goldene Gans house, meaning the Golden Goose, from the fifteenth century. The most beautiful house in Klagenfurt might just be the dome clad Landhaus, with arcade gardens and a large weapons hall with over six hundred armors and trompe l’oeil painting. Just to the north of Alter Platz in Klagenfurt lies the Wienergrasse with its pretty buildings, many of which have stuccoes in the shape of animal heads. At the edge of the pedestrian walking area of Klagenfurt, on Neuer Platz, stands the famous stone fountain with Klagenfurt’s city weapon, a terrifying dagon. The Stadttheater, which is located close to Landhaus, and built in a juguend fashion, is the head quarters in Klagenfurt for opera and operetta as well as for drama. Once in a while, concerts and dance performances are held here as well. During the wonderful, warm summer time, in many of Klagenfurt’s squares, different kinds of performances are held for the public to enjoy while walking around town. Accommodation options are well met in Klagenfurt. Two hotels stand out in terms of standard, namely the Romantik Hotel Musil and Schlosshotel Palais Porcia. They are both located in old palaces, which results in a stunning rooms and a generally pleasant atmosphere, not like other stressed out cities such as London. A couple of more modest options in Klagenfurt are Hotel Moser Verdino, in jugend style with a cozy café and cocktail bar, and the Blumenstokl which is a three star hotel located in the cetre of Klagenfurt on Oktoberstrasse. Klagenfurt hosted some of the matches that took place during the Euro 2008 football championship this last summer in June. The Klagenfurt stadium is called the Worthersee Stadion and is completely new, opened as late as two thousand and seven. It is multifunctional with many facilities and is beautifully located next to Lake Wörthersee. You might be able to find a hotel between the city center Klagenfurt town and here, it’s a five kilometre walk to town. If you feel like a historical outing, the Middle Age settlement of St Veit an der Glan is eighteen kilometers to the south east of Klagenfurt. The settlement itself is long gone, but there are still some beautiful baroque architecture to be seen here, especially at the Rathaus. |
